Shower Niche Cost in Ottawa: Size, Placement and Waterproofing

A standard tiled niche is included in our $15 to $30 per sq ft shower installation rate in Ottawa. Sizes, placement, waterproofing and retrofits.

When we build or rebuild a shower in Ottawa, a standard tiled niche is included in our shower installation rate of $15 to $30 per square foot, along with the curb tiling. A niche finished as a feature, in mosaic or a contrasting tile, is accent work at $15 to $40+ per square foot. Ready-made waterproof niche inserts sell for about $65 to $375 for the insert alone, before installation.

Key takeaways

  • A niche added to a shower that is already tiled is quoted on its own, after we inspect the wall.
  • Mosaic or feature-tile niches cost more per square foot because small areas take more cutting time.
  • A standard niche fits between two wall studs, in about 14.5 inches of framing width and 3.5 inches of depth before finishes.
  • Avoid exterior walls where you can. A niche can reduce insulation and disturb the vapour barrier in an Ottawa winter.
  • A niche has to be waterproofed as its own unit, with a sloped sill, or it becomes the weak spot in the shower.

How much does a shower niche cost in Ottawa?

The price depends mostly on when the niche goes in.

During a new shower or a full retile. The wall is already open, the membrane is going on anyway, and the niche is framed and tiled with the rest of the shower. A standard niche does not carry a separate price: it is part of the shower installation rate quoted above, which covers the shower walls, pan, niche and curb.

As a feature or accent. A niche lined with mosaic, stone or a contrasting tile is priced as accent work, at $15 to $40+ per square foot. Small areas carry a higher rate per square foot because the labour is in the cutting and alignment, not the size.

Ready-made insert or framed niche. A ready-made waterproof insert costs about $65 to $375 for the material alone, from a basic insert to a premium model. It saves framing time, but it still has to be fastened, sealed into the wall membrane and tiled, so the install labour does not disappear.

Adding a niche to a shower that is already tiled. This means cutting through finished tile and the waterproofing behind it, then rebuilding the affected section so the waterproofing remains continuous. We quote this work after inspecting the wall, because the existing waterproofing system, tile availability and the amount of reconstruction decide whether a safe retrofit is possible.

If the niche is part of a larger job, it helps to see the whole budget first. Our guide to what it costs to retile a bathroom in Ottawa covers floors, tub surrounds and full custom showers.

How big should a shower niche be?

Standard framing with studs 16 inches on centre leaves about 14.5 inches between the studs, and a typical 2×4 wall gives 3.5 inches of framing depth. That is why the common niche sits between two studs without moving any framing. The finished niche is smaller than that space once the niche body, waterproofing and tile are installed, so we measure the wall before choosing a niche. Ready-made niches come in their own sizes, each with its own framing requirements.

Height is up to you. A niche 12 inches tall holds most shampoo bottles, and a taller niche can take a shelf in the middle.

A long horizontal niche, stretching across two or more stud bays, may need framing changes. Cutting a stud is assessed before any work starts, especially in a load-bearing wall, and the extra framing adds time and cost.

The cleanest niches are sized to the tile. If the niche height matches one or two rows of your wall tile, the grout lines run straight through the opening and you avoid thin slivers of cut tile around the edges. We plan this before the niche is framed, not after.

Where should a shower niche go, and where should it not?

Avoid exterior walls. A recessed niche can reduce insulation and disturb the air and vapour-control layers inside an exterior wall. In Ottawa’s winters, an interior wall is usually the safer choice. An exterior-wall niche only makes sense when the wall can be built to keep its insulation, moisture control and waterproofing intact.

Not where the plumbing runs. The wall with the shower valve usually has supply lines inside it. We check what is in the wall before we choose the stud bay.

Out of the direct spray, if possible. A niche facing the shower head collects water and soap film and needs more cleaning. The side wall, or the back wall away from the head, usually works better.

At a comfortable height. Most people like the bottom of the niche at around chest height, roughly 4 to 5 feet above the shower floor. In a shower used by children or a seated bather, a second, lower niche can make sense.

In a condo, check the rules first. Cutting into a wall can need board approval. Our condo bathroom tile guide covers approvals and what to ask your building before work starts.

How is a shower niche waterproofed?

A niche is a hole cut in the waterproofed wall, so it needs more care than the flat wall around it. A site-built niche needs waterproofing across its back, sides, corners and sill. A ready-made waterproof niche comes with that protection built in, but its connection to the surrounding shower membrane still has to be sealed to the manufacturer’s instructions. For a site-built niche, the job looks like this:

  • The opening is framed solid on all four sides, with backer board lining the back, sides, top and sill.
  • The waterproof membrane wraps into the niche and overlaps the wall membrane at every corner, so there are no gaps where the niche meets the wall.
  • The sill slopes slightly toward the shower, so water runs out instead of sitting on the ledge.
  • The tile goes on last, after the membrane is complete and sealed.

The sloped sill matters more than most people think. A flat sill holds standing water every time the shower runs. The membrane behind the tile is the waterproof barrier, not the grout, but water that sits on a ledge every day still stains and wears the grout around it.

Are shower niches still in style?

Yes. A recessed niche keeps bottles off the floor and off the tub edge, without a caddy hanging from the shower head. The current choices are mostly about how the niche looks:

  • Same tile as the walls. The niche blends in and the shower looks calm and simple.
  • Accent tile or mosaic. The niche becomes a feature, often in a contrasting colour or finish.
  • Long horizontal niche. One wide opening across the back wall, sometimes with a shelf.
  • Finished edges. Mitred tile corners or a slim metal edge trim, instead of bullnose pieces.

With large-format wall tile, plan the niche carefully. Big tiles leave less room to hide uneven cuts, so the layout is worth working out before any tile is ordered.

Does a niche add time to a shower job?

When a niche is built as part of a new shower, it adds framing, waterproofing and tile detail, but not a separate stage. The membrane needs time to cure before tile goes on, and the niche cures along with the rest of the shower walls. Adding a niche to an existing shower is different: the cut, rebuild and cure happen as their own job, and the timeline is set in the written quote.
